Local Neighbourhood
Considered one of Bangkok’s central business and commercial districts, Asok (sometimes spelt ‘Asoke’) has also long been a very popular residential neighbourhood for foreigners because of its convenient public transportation connections.
Asok roughly consists of Sukhumvit Sois 15-29 on the north and Sois 10-20 on the south. Its heart is established by the overground BTS Asok station and the underground MRT Sukhumvit station, which are connected via an escalator for easy access. Traveling a station to the west gets you to Nana, to the east: Phrom Phong, to the north: Phetchaburi, and to the south: Queen Sirikit Convention Center.
You can find both BTS and MRT stations in Asok, and transferring from one to another is simple. BTS Asok has a large overhead walkway connecting to many adjacent shopping centers and office buildings. MRT Sukhumvit Station houses a Metro Mall. Travelers to Suvarnabhumi International and Don Muang Airport can catch the Airport Rail Link from MRT Phetchaburi Station or BTS Phayathai. Ferry services along the Saen Saep Canal are also available at the Asoke Pier.

Thong Lor and Ekkamai are very close to each other. Just a street over, however Ekkamai typically is better value yet still just 5-10 min away.
While close to each other, Thonglor is more developed and has numerous shops, bars and restaurants. It is a more "desirable" neighbourhood and in demand. It will attract higher prices for both rent and sale. Ekkamai is a developing area, and will eventually catch up to Thonglor. So, if you like trendy areas, Tonglor will be your more expensive option, if you prefer to stretch your budget a little further, Ekkamai is a good option with a strong potential to increase in value.
