If you are searching for the best restaurants in Chiang Mai, the MICHELIN Guide is a reliable place to start, provided you read it correctly. Most lists online mix genuine Michelin entries with unrelated favourites and call everything Michelin. This one does not. Every restaurant below holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide, the value tier where Chiang Mai is strongest. If you are visiting, or weighing a move after reading about Chiang Mai as a haven for locals and expats, eating well here is easy on almost any budget.
What Michelin Recognition Actually Means in Chiang Mai
A Michelin Star, a Bib Gourmand, and a Michelin Selected listing are three different things.
-
Michelin Star: awarded for exceptional cooking, from one to three stars. Chiang Mai has no starred restaurants in the 2026 guide.
-
Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking, marked with the Michelin Man logo. Chiang Mai has 18 Bib Gourmand venues in 2026, three of them new.
-
Michelin Selected: a listing in the guide for good cooking, without a Star or a Bib.
That is why any list calling Chiang Mai restaurants starred is wrong. The accurate wording is Michelin recommended, Bib Gourmand, or Michelin Selected. The three 2026 newcomers are CHAWEE, Euang Kam Sai and Gongkham. The full 18 are listed in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand, which is reissued every year, so check it before you go because venues do drop off.
7 Michelin Recommended Restaurants in Chiang Mai
All seven hold a Bib Gourmand. Prices are approximate per person and change often.
1. Khao Soi Mae Sai

Bib Gourmand, noodles. This is the shop many first-time visitors add to their route. Michelin describes a rich, slightly spicy curry broth with a choice of meat toppings, in portions small enough that a second bowl is normal. Expect roughly 60 to 120 baht a bowl. It sits on Ratchaphruek Road in Chang Phueak, opens 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Saturday, closes on Sunday, and takes cash only. No booking is needed, but lunch queues are normal, so arrive early.

Bib Gourmand, Northern Thai. This Lanna-style wooden house stands in a garden down a quiet alley off Ratchaphruek Road, diagonally opposite Khao Soi Mae Sai. Michelin recommends the spicy galangal dip with steamed mushrooms and the spicy vegetable soup with serpent-head fish. The Northern appetiser platter is the easy first order. A shared meal costs roughly 150 to 300 baht per person. It is closed on Wednesday and otherwise opens from 11 am to 3 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm. There is no online booking through Michelin, and waits from 15 minutes to an hour are reported at busy times.

3. CHAWEE

Bib Gourmand, Thai, new for 2026. Named after the chef-owner's grandmother, this small Chang Phueak room has sage-green walls, vintage touches and soft Thai music. The menu changes monthly with local produce, and Michelin singles out the spicy lychee salad for its sweet-and-sour balance. The restaurant's booking page puts a set meal at about 950 baht per person and describes a booking-only format with three to four tables. Treat it, along with Rasik, as a place to reserve days ahead.

Michelin suggests asking about the catch of the day and starting with crispy rice crackers and Thai tomato salsa. It is rated in the moderate price band, and prices are not widely published, so ask when you book. Booking is required, with only 14 to 16 seats per service across three daily rounds. Reservations run through its Facebook page. It opens from 5 pm to 10 pm and closes on Tuesday.

Michelin points to freshly made khao bai, rice wrapped around a pork, fish or beef filling, and a spicy Northern-style curry made with local beef brisket, which carries a fruity acidity. Some ingredients come from local sustainable farms. It sits in Michelin's moderate price band. Michelin lists no online booking, so plan to walk in or call ahead.

The signature dish is boneless murrel fish stuffed with pork. Diners report around 400 to 600 baht per person. It suits groups and long evenings better than a quick lunch. It opens 4:30 pm to 11 pm and is closed on Sunday. Michelin lists no online booking, so call ahead for a large table.

Where to Eat Khao Soi in Chiang Mai
Khao soi, the Northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup topped with crispy noodles, is the dish most visitors arrive wanting. Of the 18 Bib Gourmand venues, Khao Soi Mae Sai is the one built around it, and Huen Muan Jai also serves a signature version. A famous name is not the same as a Michelin listing, though. Well-known shops such as Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kad Kom are not among the 2026 Bib Gourmand 18. Tips for ordering at Mae Sai:
-
Choose beef or chicken. Beef is the popular alternative to the standard chicken bowl.
-
Squeeze in the lime and add the shallots and pickled greens served on the side.
-
Order a second small bowl or a plate of khanom jeen nam ngiao if one is not enough.
-
Bring cash and avoid Sunday, when the shop is closed.
Which Neighbourhood to Eat In
-
Chang Phueak: Khao Soi Mae Sai, Huen Muan Jai and CHAWEE sit in this area just north-west of the Old City moat. It is the easiest place to build a full day of Bib Gourmand meals.
-
Riverside and Wat Ket: Huan Soontaree on Pa Tan Road and Lung Khajohn Wat Ket sit on the Ping River side, on the east bank.
-
Wua Lai and Chang Khlan: Euang Kam Sai on Wua Lai Road and Rasik on Sridonchai Road are both just south of the Old City.
None of the seven sits inside the Old City walls or on Nimman Road, but all are a short taxi or Grab ride from either. Meena, another 2026 Bib Gourmand known for its five-coloured rice, is just outside the city in San Kamphaeng district. Thinking of staying longer? Booking, Dress Code and Opening Hours
-
Book ahead: CHAWEE and Rasik Local Kitchen both need reservations, and seating is very limited.
-
Walk-in: Khao Soi Mae Sai, Lung Khajohn Wat Ket, Huen Muan Jai and Euang Kam Sai. Expect a queue at Huen Muan Jai and Mae Sai at peak times.
-
Dress code: the listings mention none. Casual clothing suits most places, and smart casual fits CHAWEE and Rasik.
-
Hours: Mae Sai runs 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Saturday. Rasik opens 5 pm to 10 pm and closes on Tuesday. Check the latest listing for the rest.
Live Near the Best Restaurants in Chiang Mai

The seven places above range from a 20 baht dumpling box to a set-menu dinner near 950 baht, and none of them needs a starred budget. That spread is what makes eating well in Chiang Mai so practical for residents: a quick bowl of khao soi at lunch, a Northern Thai dinner by the river with live music, and a special booking-only evening when you want one. Just plan around the closing days, because Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday each close at least one of these restaurants. Michelin also updates its list every year, so expect some names to change.
