Almost every family choosing between international schools in Bangkok builds the shortlist in a search box, and increasingly they do it twice: once in Google, and once by asking an AI assistant which school would suit their child. In September 2026, we measured how 27 schools across Bangkok and the surrounding metropolitan districts perform in both. The results are below, along with what parents are actually typing and where the open ground sits.
Quick summary
-
27 international schools in Bangkok were measured on Ahrefs data in September 2026. The median visibility score was 56 and the median domain rating 23.
-
14 of the 27 are cited zero times in ChatGPT, including several that rank well in Google.
-
The largest parent search cluster is stage and age group at 4,100 monthly searches, and almost no school has a dedicated page for it.
-
Fees searches carry 2,770 monthly searches and the highest buying intent in the market, yet most schools hide fees behind a PDF or an enquiry form.
-
For the term best international school in Bangkok, a directory holds position 2, a Reddit thread holds position 3 and a property company blog holds position 7.
What the Index Measures, and What it Does Not

The visibility score is a weighted composite of five search signals. It is built for this index and is not a standard Ahrefs metric.

Nothing here reflects academic standards, accreditation, teaching quality, facilities, or student outcomes. A school can be excellent and score poorly. That gap is the point. Strong schools are routinely invisible to the families searching for them, and a family that never finds a school never visits it.
The 2026 index
Grades run A for 70 and above, B for 55 to 69, C for 40 to 54, D for 25 to 39, and F below 25. AI citations count references across all tracked AI platforms combined. Figures are Ahrefs estimates for Thailand, September 2026, and move month to month.

The spread is wide. The top six schools all score above 79, while five schools score under 25, and three of them attract no measurable organic traffic at all. Domain rating is the single clearest divider: every school in the A band has a rating of 33 or higher, and every school in the F band sits at 1 or 0.
There are useful exceptions. King Mongkut's International Demonstration School has a domain rating of just 11 and still pulls an estimated 3,255 visits a month, which shows that content matched to real demand can outperform raw authority. Shrewsbury draws 5,582 visits from 906 referring domains, while KIS holds 3,101 referring domains and converts them into 1,326 visits. Links open the door. Pages that answer a search are what walk through it.
AI Visibility Does Not Follow Google Ranking

This is the finding that surprised us most. Being findable in Google does not make a school findable in an AI answer. The two behave as separate channels.

Raintree International School Sathorn records 60 citations across all tracked AI platforms and zero in ChatGPT. KIS ranks sixth in the overall index and is also absent from ChatGPT. Running the other way, SBS International School Bangkok sits in the D band on 39.8 with an estimated 27 visits a month, yet carries 41 AI citations. Whatever produces AI presence is not the same thing that produces a Google ranking, and a school can be strong in one while missing entirely from the other.

The pattern is consistent. The clusters closest to an enquiry are the ones schools serve worst. Fees and admissions searches come from parents who have already decided to act, and both are usually answered with a form rather than a page. Stage searches such as international primary school bangkok and international nursery school bangkok make up the largest cluster in the market, and almost nobody has built a page for them.
Head terms are not the difficulty here. The category term international school bangkok carries 2,400 monthly searches at a keyword difficulty of 14. Several curriculum terms, including british international school bangkok and australian international school bangkok, register a difficulty score of 0, meaning almost nobody is competing for them.

A directory holds position 2. A forum thread holds position 3. A property company blog holds position 7, above most of the schools it writes about. Only two schools appear in the top eight. Those same directories are also among the sources AI assistants draw on when a parent asks for a recommendation, so one weak or incomplete listing costs a school twice.
The Gaps that Are Open Right Now
Ten of them, roughly ordered by return for the effort involved.
-
Publish a real fees page. 2,770 monthly searches, low competition, days of work. Actual numbers by year group, updated annually. A PDF or an enquiry form cannot rank.
-
Build one page per stage. 4,100 monthly searches, low competition. Separate pages for nursery, early years, primary, middle and high school. The largest untapped cluster in the market.
-
Build one page per curriculum. 1,880 monthly searches, very low competition. British, American, Australian, IB and Christian programme pages, several at a difficulty score of 0.
-
Turn admissions into a landing page. 430 monthly searches at the highest intent in the market. Most schools treat admissions as a form rather than a page built to be found.
-
Own your comparison searches. 1,470 monthly searches. A school that publishes an honest, well researched comparison guide competes for its own category instead of handing it to a directory.
-
Add Thai-language fee pages. Roughly 800 monthly searches. Thai parents search brand plus the Thai word for tuition, and an English-only site is invisible for every one of those.
-
Write for relocating families. 350 monthly searches, low competition. The earliest and least contested point of contact of all.
-
Fix the Google Business Profile. Hours of work. Complete categories, hours, photos, admissions links and a Q and A section. Map results feed AI answers.
-
Claim the directory listings. Days of work. The directories outranking schools are the same sources AI assistants cite, which makes a complete listing the cheapest visibility available.
-
Build the AI citation profile. Four to eight weeks. AI answers draw on structured data, third-party citations and consistent brand information across the web. All of it is buildable.
Why This Matters More in 2026 Than It Did Five Years Ago

The market has stopped being an easy one. Industry figures reported by the Bangkok Post in March 2026 put the number of international schools in Thailand at 275 in 2025, up from around 100 in 2014, with enrolment climbing from fewer than 50,000 to 92,960 over the same period. Education leaders quoted in the same report warn that growth could reach saturation within three years as falling birth rates shrink the pool of school-age children.
The money has kept pace. Kasikorn Research Center estimates the sector was worth about 95 billion baht in 2025, up from more than 85 billion baht in 2024, as reported by The Nation in May 2026. Bangkok itself is the tighter half of that picture: school numbers in the capital have been contracting by roughly 1.7 percent a year while the provinces expand.
More schools competing for a slower-growing pool of families is a market where share of search turns directly into share of enquiries. Annual tuition of roughly 500,000 to 1.2 million baht, per the same March 2026 Bangkok Post reporting, means a single enrolment is worth several million baht across a school career. At that value, a fees page that does not rank is not a marketing detail.
What This Means for Families Moving to Bangkok
The relocation cluster is the one we watch most closely, because it is where families start. A search like apartment near international school bangkok comes from a family that has not chosen a district yet, let alone a school. It carries 300 monthly searches, and in our data, no school serves it.
That gap is real for parents too. Bangkok commutes are long, and school choice and housing choice are the same decision. Families weighing Watthana for condos for rent near NIST International against Huai Khwang for homes near KIS International are really weighing two different daily routines. Larger families usually start with three-bedroom rentals across Bangkok and narrow down from there.
Sukhumvit remains the default for many arriving families, and Ekkamai is one of the neighbourhoods expats settle in most often. Some families look outside the capital entirely, and there are sound reasons parents choose international schools in Pattaya over Bangkok, usually a shorter commute and a lower cost of living for the same curriculum.
How schools can close the gap
If a school does one thing after reading this, it should be the first item. The order below is by distance from an enquiry, not by effort.
-
Publish real fees and a page per stage. Largest volume, lowest competition, closest to an enquiry.
-
Complete the Google Business Profile and the directory listings. Hours of work, and it feeds both maps and AI answers.
-
Build curriculum landing pages. Several of these terms carry a difficulty score of 0.
-
Publish an honest comparison guide. It reclaims the searches currently held by directories.
-
Build the AI citation profile. It is the slowest to move, so start it while the quick wins run.
The mechanics are not school-specific. The same approach we set out in our guide to search strategy for real estate businesses in Thailand applies here: build the page that answers the search, then make sure the rest of the web agrees you exist.
We do not measure success by keyword rankings or traffic volume alone. Those are inputs. The metric that matters to a school is admissions, and every recommendation above is chosen for how close it sits to that outcome rather than for its effect on a dashboard.
Your school's own breakdown. This report covers the market.
